Arts and Humanities Featured Events!

Flyer for a History Forum book talk featuring Elizabeth O’Brien, Associate Professor of History at UCLA. The talk is titled “A History of Race, Religion, and Reproductive Injustice in Mexico, 1770–1940.” It discusses her book Surgery and Salvation (UNC Press, 2023), which examines reproductive politics in Mexico from the Enlightenment through the age of eugenics, linking racial prejudice and religious paternalism to maternal health, abortion access, and feminist resistance movements. Event details: Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM in the Dezember Reading Room at Walter Stiern Library. The event is free and open to the public. Co-sponsors include the CSUB Department of History, Walter W. Stiern Library, and the ASI Instructionally Related Activities Program. The History Forum welcomes Elizabeth O’Brien (UCLA) for a book talk on Surgery and Salvation: A History of Race, Religion, and Reproductive Injustice in Mexico, 1770–1940.

O’Brien will explore the historical roots of reproductive politics in Mexico and reflect on the challenges of representing this history through her current graphic novel project.
