Musical Performance Award

Doug Davis Composition and Performance Endowment of CSUB

Select a composition from the dropdown menu below to enter the appropriate submission. Partial performances of multi-movement works are still eligible for award consideration. The deadline each year is December 31. Afterwards, submitted performances are adjudicated and awards are designated. Some scores and recordings can be downloaded from the list below. All compositions are open for performance submissions. The Submission Entry Form is below the list of Compositions (2026-2030) and Recent Awards Given.

Compositions

2026 Ron Kean: American Mass (for His 75th Birthday) - $5,000 Minimum

  • SATB edition with scrolling score
  • SSA edition with scrolling score

2026 Doug Davis: Dust Swirls, Then Speaks for Orchestra (2222/4331/Timp2/Hrp/Str) - $7,500 Minimum

  • Dust Swirls, then Speaks score
  • Dust Swirls, then Speaks performance
  • Dust Swirls, then Speaks Parts (typically 5 to 6 pages)
  • Dust Swirls, then Speaks Parts with string bowings (as 8-page booklet to be folded and stapled in middle)

2027 Bennie Wallace: Selected Compositions (TBD) (for his 80th birthday) - $4,000 minimum

2027 Woodwind Quintet Composition (Flt, Ob, Cl, Bsn, Hrn) - $1,000

  • Self-published Composer: submit work on Entry Form at bottom, single composition only. Submission Deadline June 7, 2026.
  • (No performance guaranteed. $1,000 to composer of winning Woodwind Quintet Composition Performance Award)

2027 Woodwind Quintet Performance Participation - $2,000

  • If ensemble agrees, a single member of the group submits Entry Form at bottom (for Contact initially, Submission Deadline June 7, 2026)
  • (No obligations for any performance. Up to ten entered compositions will be sent to you. Any selected for performance by you may be entered using the Submission form below for award consideration. Submission Deadline December 31, 2027. A $2,000 Performance Award will be given to your quintet, if you performed the winning composition. Most importantly, you’ve said “hello” to a few new composers.)

2028 Doug Davis: Psalm of an Orange Angel for Orchestra (2222/3221/timp2/pn/str) (for his 80th birthday) - $10,000 minimum

  • Psalm of an Orange Angel Parts (3 to 7 pages)

2029 George Crumb: Vox Balaenae  (Voice of the Whale) for 'Electric' (Amplified) Flute, Cello, and Piano (for his 100th Birthday) - $8,500 Minimum

  • For Score (2):

    • Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale) for Three Masked Players Sheet Music
  • For Recording:
    • George Crumb: An Idyll for the Misbegotten/Vox Balaenae/Madrigals

2030: Commission for a Concert Band Composition ($4,000) (TBD)

  • Discretionary Composer Award: To be determined by Bernardo Scarambone
  • Designated Performance Award: Karin Di Bella (St. Catharines, Ontario) for the recording: Solo Piano Music of Jack Behrens

2024: Doug Davis: B & Me (Jazz Ensemble) - $4,000

  • First Prize: Ohio University Jazz Ensemble: Matt James, director
    • Outstanding Performances: Dom O’Korn, drums and Connor Wertman, alto sax
  • Second Prize: Cal Poly Humboldt Jazz Orchestra: Dan Aldag, director
    • Outstanding Performance: John Gerving, piano
  • Honorable Mentions (multiple):
    1. New Mexico State Jazz Ensemble: Jacob Dalager, director
      • Outstanding Performance: Steven Rokowski, trumpet
    2. Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble: Kris Tiner, director
      • Outstanding Performance: Aidan Scully, drums

2024/2025: Discretionary Composer Awards (For Prize, Commission, or Honorarium) - $5,000

  • Felix Wang, (Award winner for Lukas Foss: Capriccio for cello and piano) given to composer:
    Allysa Weinberg: in support of her continued composition.
  • Heather Conner, (Award winner for Lukas Foss: Capriccio for cello and piano) given to composer:
    Samuel Zyman: in support of his next composition and performance of his Viola Sonata
  • Robert McClure: Celestial Miniatures (2023) for solo piano performed by:
    Emely Phelps at the SCI Regional Conference at Ohio University on November 3, 2023
  • Juliet Papadopoulos (Award winner for Doug Davis: Family Portraits) given to composer:
    Alexey Gorokholinsky in support of his next composition.
  • Claire McCahan (Award winner for Doug Davis: Family Portraits) given to composer:
    Omar Najmi in support of his composition.
  • Anthony Rinaldi: Dinamita (2025) for jazz ensemble, performed by the Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble, Kris Tiner, director
  • Jason Anthony Gomez: Potentia (2025) for Orchestra Santa Monica with Jubilant Sykes, baritone/narrator; text by Anne Carmack; Roger Kalia, music director

2024: Commission to Johanny Navarro for Meciendo, text by Gabriela Mistral, composition for SATB chorus and piano ($4,000)

2024/2025: Discretionary Performance or Project Awards ($6,000)

  • Ty Kim for his documentary film Earl, the story of composer Earl Kim, with appearances of Itzhak Perlman, Benita Valente, John Harbison, Paul Salerni, and Kim’s family with performances of Sejong Soloists
  • Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra: Stilian Kirov, Music Director; performances of Kyle Shaw: Verdant and Jonathan Cziner: Solaris, Stella Chen, violin soloist
  • Jaime Sevilla: Blade Rider movie script, musical score, recording, and trailer production. Mayyor, Caley Mayhall, Anna Santiago, and Jehdiah Woodrow, singers
  • Lynn Eustis, soprano and Kevin Jones, piano for a performance of Doug Davis: Family Portraits; Tsai Performance Center, Boston University
