CSUB understands the challenges of leaving your newborn and is committed to easing the transition through accommodations for employee break times and use of campus lactation spaces. Lactating parents have a right to request a reasonable lactation accommodation, including a private space reasonably close to their working and learning environment.
Pregnant, parenting and lactating faculty and staff are protected under our CSU Anti-Discrimination/Anti-Harassment Policy. Section 4207 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) amends Section 7 of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to require employers to provide a break each time an employee needs to express milk, in a location other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion by coworkers and the public. This provision is inclusive to all lactating women through the first year of the child's life.

CSUB maintains several dedicated lactation spaces which include access to a chair, table, a nearby sink and electrical outlets. Those spaces may be found here: Lactation/Nursing Rooms at CSUB. If no permanent lactation space exists in a reasonably close location, you can request a temporary lactation space. The University will make every effort to provide reasonable accommodations based on available space and resources and will provide a response to your request, including a written notice if a requested accommodation can't be provided. If you need assistance with locating an available private space for lactation purposes or have any questions, please contact the Office of Human Resources and/or your department.
